Beading Culture

Tânisi!

Nitisinihkâsowin Ashley, nina ochi Thompson, Manitoba. I am a proud Indigenous woman living in Nêhiyânâhk Territory 5, Manitoba, and the proud owner of Beading Culture, established in 2023.

My journey into traditional craftsmanship began at the age of 15, when I was first introduced to the art of moccasin making. By the age of 17, I had sold my very first pair. What began as a passion grew into a meaningful journey of learning, creating, and sharing Indigenous artistry. Beading came into my life afterward and has since become my area of expertise and one of my greatest passions.

At Beading Culture, I am passionate about preserving and sharing these skills with others. Through in-store workshops and community engagement, I enjoy teaching people of all ages, creating opportunities to learn, connect, and appreciate the beauty of Indigenous craftsmanship.

After years of dedication, hard work, and working toward my goals, a dream became reality on June 8, 2026, when Beading Culture opened its first retail location in The Pas, Manitoba. This milestone represents more than opening a storefront; it reflects years of perseverance, personal growth, and a commitment to sharing my passion with the community.

This journey would not have been possible without the encouragement and support of the people who believed in me along the way. I am especially grateful to the instructors at the University College of the North, including Mark Matesiak, and to Michelle Pruden of Community Futures North Central Development, along with my friends and family. Their guidance, encouragement, and support have played an important role in helping me reach this milestone.

Beading Culture is more than a business. It is a place to create, learn, share knowledge, and celebrate Indigenous artistry. I look forward to continuing to grow, connect with my community, and inspire others to explore the beauty of moccasin making and beadwork.

Thank you for being part of this journey and for supporting Beading Culture.

With gratitude,

Ashley
